The beautiful Donna O'Brien!
TBC: What inspires you as a designer?
Donna: Inspiration comes from so many places for me. I get inspired walking down the street and looking in shop windows. I may see a color combination that excites me or a texture that catches my eye. Years ago, I had a career in fashion so I am often influenced by colors, fabrics and details in fashion and home trends. I recently went to an exhibit at the museum and my head kept spinning with so many new inspirations. I love going to the New York City flower market and just walk around. There are always new and interesting varieties of flowers that I have never seen. My fingers and toes start to tingle with glee.
TBC: What is the best part about your job?
Donna: My job has changed as we have grown but my favorite jobs are those where we get to work on not only the flowers but the whole overall look which is not only flowers but includes linens, lighting, draping, furniture, charger plates, etc.
TBC: What has been the highlight of your career to date?
Donna: My highlight of my career....watching the business grow and building a great team. I used to do everything myself and now I have a team that is great, cares about what we do and looks out for each other. I have also been very lucky to have the company get recognized by a lot of top magazines. Now they come to us asking for weddings to showcase. We recently did M. Night Shamalan's party and an event where Bono of U2 was receiving an award and an event for First Lady, Laura Bush.....all pretty cool.
TBC: What are the floral/decor wedding trends for 2008?
Donna: Vintage....Hearing again the whole vintage influence, lush, opulence....creams, ivories, blushes and tea satin colors. Crystal accents but more in charger plates and crystal chandeliers. Romance/Drama...Clients are being drawn back to reds and magentas. Accents of black including chandelier crystals. Organic....Still continues but we look for new ways to do it without branches.
TBC: What are your favorite color-palettes for weddings?
Donna: I still love yellow...all shades mixed together.
TBC: What type of venues are the most fun to design for?
Donna: Unusual spots such as museums, outdoors, art galleries, client's homes, or castle-like locations.
TBC: What 3 adjectives describe your style?
Donna: Always tasteful...no matter what! We can do modern, girly, manly, etc. - but it always has to be neat, tasteful and many times with a slight twist to make people look twice.
TBC: Describe a "Beautiful Blooms Signature Wedding".
Donna: It is a truly designed look. Everything cohesive. All the details are thought through and interesting. Every flower means something to the arrangement. Interesting containers, ribbons, etc. Everything works together beautifully. We also use only the freshest flowers and that makes a difference.
TBC: Tell us a little about your feature on The Style Network's ...Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?
Donna: We have done two episodes. One is the "Surprise Wedding" with Gina Sole. The guest thought they were coming to a surprise 40th birthday party. The ceremony was all white and the reception was all reds.
